I did a force reset twice at the instruction of the kobo rep. No dice

There should be no problem. If your replacement was also not working properly, you'd be able to sort it under warranty and I would expect you could return it if you wanted.
The front light works on 0% warmlight (completely blue toned), but I guess the orangey LEDs that would be on when the warmlight is at 100% are what died. And I use the warm light all the time!
