Ugh omggggggg, it turns out the USB OTG cable I described ITT ages ago *was* (and is) working - but I hadn't mounted it properly in my Android file manager, so it was never visible.
(To be more precise, I was using the Material Files app from F-droid - but in order for the Kindle to be visible there, I had to do "Add storage", which took me to the default LineageOS file manager, in which the Kindle was already mounted and visible).

More notes:
- Once I've copied a file from the phone onto the Kindle, I always need to manually eject the Kindle from the file manager before unplugging - otherwise, the file I'd just copied bugs out and becomes
0 bytes in size.
- Around half the time, I need to unplug and reinsert the Kindle in order for it to be detected.
