Ugh omggggggg, it turns out the USB OTG cable I described ITT ages ago *was* (and is) working - but I hadn't mounted it properly in my Android file manager, so it was never visible.

(To be more precise, I was using the Material Files app from F-droid - but in order for the Kindle to be visible there, I had to do "Add storage", which took me to the default LineageOS file manager, in which the Kindle was already mounted and visible).

Thanks, this is definitely workable now.

More notes:
- Once I've copied a file from the phone onto the Kindle, I always need to manually eject the Kindle from the file manager before unplugging - otherwise, the file I'd just copied bugs out and becomes 0 bytes in size.
- Around half the time, I need to unplug and reinsert the Kindle in order for it to be detected.
