Mobi is not really present in Europe, ePub is more here

I don't know about prc support in France - which is quite ironic since Mobipocket was/is a French company -, but Mobi prc has a very strong following in Germany. epub is much too young, and Palm pdb never could break into German eBook market.
For all mobile pre-E-Ink devices prc was a de facto German standard if you didn't want to use pdf.
It would be a major flaw in Amazon's market policy if the would fall for the dumbest mistake of them all - not caring about the different settings and rules for a different market.
If Amazon won't care for the European market, some other company gladly will. Amazon doesn't have such a huge market share at least in Germany (it is strong for sure), so their Kindle - should it ever come to Europe - will be rather late, will have to face quite some vivid competition and simply won't be such a granted success (still don't know if I call those 250.000 US-sales a success or not ...) as in the US.
Buying Stanza was a clever move. About the rest I'm not so sure. But then, I don't care. The Kindle doesn't attract me, neither does Amazon's proprietary policy or their treatment of customers lately.
