Unfortunately I don't trust Amazon anymore in this.
Having used Kindles since 2009, I never ever had a problem, until last year (or 2022?) when I noticed that sometimes covers would change or certain books couldn't be opened or downloaded. I didn't pay too much attention until I spent a large sum of money on reference literature and academic books in January that I need for a new project in my work, instead of the rather cheap Collected Works, the random novel, or books on sale.
Then, some weeks ago (around Easter) I opened up the Kindle desktop app on my PC as I usually do when I want to make a purchase and be sure that I am not buying something twice, then bought a book on Amazon in the browser, "welcomed" it in the app (send to 1 or 2 collections and download) and wanted to proceed from there to also download my new book on my other devices, since I happily take full advantage of the fact that you can have most Kindle books on up to 6 devices. (Only once did the app tells me that 5 would be the max. number of devices to download this specific title -- Fenton/Kiefer Lee: Nicely Said -- to.)
Then I turned on Wi-Fi on the other devices where I wanted to DL this new book to, but: On my Paperwhite my library was completely empty, all downloads gone, the same on my Supernote Nomad and 3 Boox devices (Poke5, NA3C, TabX), where I found myself logged out of the Kindle app and all downloads gone. Logging in and refreshing "gave me back" my library, but having to download 950 titles (and not only once) is not exactly what I would like to do again so soon. Around 100 mostly older titles that I had bought around 2009-2013 couldn't be downloaded or accessed at all. WTF!?
So, what did I learn from that? Don't trust the cloud.
Luckily a book-loving friend of mine had told me in January that he had bought an e-book twice inadvertently, and instead of just annulling that purchase, his entire Tolino library was cleared by mistake. He got all his books back, but this alarmed me enough to look into Calibre then and treat my books with its functions.
tl;dr: Opening the Kindle app and starting up the Paperwhite to find all my books gone was some kind of a (healthy) shock and reminder to not trust the cloud (completely).
