By the time I knew a lot of people who were reading and recommending the series, there were already something like five books out, and more on the way. And the people who didn't like it all said the same thing: they're too long, nothing much happens, it just drags on without resolution. So I didn't bother.

As to Brandon's explanation of how one book became two and then three... well, I don't doubt it, and perhaps that was not what was originally planned, but I'm sure the people at Tor and owners of bookstores everywhere are going *KA-CHING!* at the prospect.
