What's weird though, in Calibre while in the device tab, the covers are showing as greyscale?
A few firmware updates back, Kobo went from writing the frame buffer in 24 bit colour so screenshots were in colour to writing it in 4 bit grayscale so doing a screenshot of a colour image now shows a grayscale image. If you look at the parsed image files for an ebook (found in the .kobo-images/number/number (the numbers are based on hashing the ebook name), they are in colour. If you rename the parsed files to .png, you can display them without having to play games.
