Are you aware you can also delete files from the iLiad through its delete icon? Just select the trash can with the stylus, select the items to delete, then select the trash can again. You can delete a page of files at a time (6).

Actually, no I can't. I've even tried rm -rf from a command shell but get the error "filename too long". So I tried using emacs meta-x dired, as I've had luck with that before when filenames got borked, but even emacs puked on the filenames down the notes directory. Using the internal trash can on the iliad doesn't work either. Nor does finder.
Definitely some kind of filesystem corruption. I had to format the CF card to fix the issue there, but notes have been configured to be saved in internal memory. I have no idea how to wipe the files from there.
EDIT: BTW: big success in scanning my language textbook and using Acrobat to "optimize PDF" images with compression. Strangely, I'm seeing a big difference in filesize with ~25 page scans (a chapter) at 600x600dpi scaled down to ~150dpi and compressed depending on the version of Acrobat. Acrobat 6 will create filesizes of ~1 - 2MB, while Acrobat 8 creates files on the order of 15-20MB. Why is this? It makes a big difference in page turn speed. The smaller file with the older version of Acrobat works much better.
