Maybe the many different, well thought out and interesting characters, mabye just Jordans style of writing. I don't know. The story isn't that special (even if Jordan had some ideas which can't be found in most other fantasy books, eg. his conception of magic). The story, the sub-stories, the places and peoples are just a little bit different from that what other authors wrote. Jordan is (was) an author who is able to place his "imagination" directly in your head through his written words...
