Check out 'The last question' by Isaac Asimov. its a short story, and available here:
http://www.multivax.com/last_question.html (I believe this is a legal copy, seeing as how the domain name itself derives from the story). Also 'Nightfall' by asimov - i havent read the book version, but the original short story is also amazing.
