The Bat by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, 1st in his popular Harry Hole series starring a dysfunctional detective mostly in Oslo. This one is an early adventure taking him overseas to Australia, which netted both the prestigious Glass Key Award and Riverton Prize but IMHO is the weakest of the series. YMMV, and it's been an MR Book Club selection before.
