We call this "pot-luck", and as a courtesy I would have phoned ahead to find out what *dishes* have already been offered, so that there wouldn't be 10 variations of (e)scalloped potatoes.
I would have assumed there was a typo and brought a "date", same with "dish", if I received an invitation like this from one of my friends.
