Thank all for your help.
Turns out it was my own fault.
At some point I must have clicked on the embedded fonts and that was what was causing the extra size.
I tried converting it with kepubify and once I realised that kepubs could be the same (small) size I went through every setting in the calibre conversion until I found the embedded fonts.
Lesson learnt.
