I am right handed but also like the feel and key placement of the 500 better than the 505. Even the increased quality of the 505's screen is not enough to get me to switch.
I understand your reluctance about acquiring a second hand unit of a model that may be two and a half years old before you get it. While there were quality control problems with the original screens that seems to be fixed on the 505/700 models, there is still the problem with the not user changeable two plus year old battery. (There is a thread around here someplace about how to change your own battery.)
I'm sure you already know that the 505 offers a faster processor, more internal memory, and the ability to read ePub in addition to a better, sharper screen. I did not find these enough to overcome the awkward button interface. The 500 is simply an easier device for me to use.
If my screen went out today, I would look to replace it with another 500 either through picking up a used unit (~$125 to $175) or through Sony repair (~$250.)
