As far as I understand, any books that entered the public domain prior to that change are still in the public domain since there was no revival of copyright. So John Taine's books were in the public domain in 2011 in Canada under life+50. As I understand the discussions I've seen, the USA changed their rules in 1992 which extended the copyright expiration to 2031.

I should have made it clearer what I was referring to with life+50.
