Next time it works, switch into list view, exit, and restart - does it hang?
Which OS do you use - Windows, MacOS, or Linux) and which version.
Where is the library, e.g. internal SSD or HDD, USB drive, if it is on network attached storage then that is almost certainly the cause of your problems.
