Kobo mini (N705) not working

I am hoping this thread is the right place to get some help.
I have read through a few other threads on this forum and didn't see the exact solution for the problem I am having. I recently received a Kobo Mini (model N705) that was previously used. When I initially connected it to my home wifi there was no issue however I noticed the Kobo account signed in was the person who gave it to me. So after I signed out so I could sign in using my own Kobo account I was first prompted with a new setup screen where I select language English and then connect over Wifi after entering my wifi password results in dialog box: "Something went wrong... Please try again" and I have made sure the password is correct and this message happens despite trying multiple wifi networks. Then I tried connecting directly with the usb cable and the Kobo isn't detected (tried multiple PCs) - so now I am faced with re-imaging the device? I have already opened the device and confirmed the SD card (2GB) that's inside reads fine when I plug into my PC directly. I do have a spare blank SD card (16 GB) so would a new SD image help fix this? If so please send me an image for Kobo Mini (n705).
