In the case of a nuclear winter, I suspect that worrying about what word choices were made in online forums would be very low on most people's list of concerns.
I will admit to be amused by one person referring to 1816 (described as The Year Without A Summer) as a nuclear winter. I have trouble seeing the eruptions of Mount Tambora in 1815 and Mayon in 1814 as being nuclear.
