It's inevitable once the word count exceeds a certain limit. How, for example, would you print "The Wheel of Time" with its 4.5 million words? In essence, it's all one long continous story. The same goes for many other fantasy behemoths (
A Song of Ice and Fire,
Stormlight Archive,
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn and so on). There's just no way to release them on paper as single novels. Even
The Lord of the Rings was barely possible to be released in one volume.
