Ok. Why I am actually doing this? With publisher defaults, and even with stix text, I get this in a book purchased from the Kobo store:

http://www.ghira.mistral.co.uk/missingsymbol1.jpg with a rectangle or a rectangle with a question mark in it at the beginning of line 4.

With noto I get this: http://www.ghira.mistral.co.uk/missingsymbol2.jpg but it looks to me like the whole thing has come out bold. If I use noto in other books it looks normal so at this point I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if the book is defective. You would think with publisher default that symbol should show up, no? Maybe that's optimistic.
