I was looking in the .adds folder before. I didn't see anything show up there when I tried
the method here. I poked around at things and realized that the logs not being copied might be related to my initial problem, which you hinted at below. Nothing launched from the PNGs directly from Nickel in My Books, only from NickelMenu.
I left the kfmon.log attached to the post, though it's probably not needed now. I ended up using the KOReader terminal to copy it to the USB-accessible mount, since the kfmon.log PNG didn't work.

Now I know that this firmware version is
known to be susceptible to DB corruption. I logged out, logged in, and re-ran the OCP install script. After Nickel went through and generated the thumbnails, the messages no longer show up.
