officially, you can only get a kindle in the US, and you can only buy books from amazon with a US credit card. but some people have found ways around that (buy a kindle on ebay, open a new amazon account, don't register any credit card, and use gift cards only to buy books).
however, i would strongly recommend you get a device which supports the epub format, which is the new industry standard format, and is being widely adopted particularly in europe. kindle uses a modified, proprietary version of the mobipocket format, and no direct support for epub has been announced (or is likely). but, sony readers already support it, bookeen has announced support for it soon, i believe the bebook already supports it... you can take a look in our
e-ink reader matrix to compare some different devices. if you want the kindle for the note-taking abilities, the sony 700 can do that via a software keyboard (touchscreen) (i have a 700 and i use the notes feature all the time, it works really well). and there will be some really interesting new devices available very soon.
what are the specific features which interest you ?
