At one stage I ran the server from calibre portable version 3.48 alongside later versions of calibre desktop. When that started to play up I switched to CalibreSpy for a while, it provided read only access to multiple libraries concurrently. But afaik it's stopped working and the developer hasn't been seen for months.

I've considered writing my own front end, but haven't been willing to commit the time to try to capture all the edge cases. I also thought about seeing if I can amend (a copy of) the current code to allow multiple concurrent libraries but haven't found the time.
