It has always been this way. When gutenberg came up with the printing press, his system borrowed stuff from the previous medium, scrolls, et cetera. And eBooks borrow from printed books. The newer media tend to *borrow from*, *augment* and *extend* the older media.
From scrolls -> books, the process was sort of manual and painstaking and it took a long time for the valuable things to transform into the new medium.
If there is no good way to reuse whatever humanity has built up already, I'd imagine it quite difficult to invent and work on new media.
