I read the advice. The bit about deleting folders snagged my attention. Something I hadn't tried.
And then I had to pay attention to everything else in the word. My B.
Anyway: I got Calibre back!
(For ref: This is a Windows system
Edition: Windows 10 Pro
Version: 22H2
Installed on: 19-Jun-20
OS build: 19045.3570)
1. Uninstalled Calibre 6.29.0 using windows uninstall from the Settings -> Apps.
(6.29.0 was the last version I was using when all this happened.)
2. Confirmed all Calibre keys gone from Registry
3. Deleted all the Calibre folders in C:\Users\%MyUserName%\App Data\Local\ and in ..\Roaming\
4. Also deleted the default Calibre Library at C:\Users\%MyUserName%\ but do not do this without backup: My actual Calibre Library with all my books and preference settings is out on a NAS. (And I temporarily renamed it just to be safe)
5. Reinstalled 6.29.0
I got Calibre back!!! (Had to adjust the IU font size back to The Old Man size. Boom!)
6. Updated to 7.1.0.
All is well.
