It is #2, gestures can be done slowly, but in quick succession.
However, most importantly - these gestures must be performed while there are screensaver changing every ~10 seconds, aka demo mode. I had many times booted into “demo” mode which only had one screensaver and gestures didn’t work at all. Then I had to hold the power button until the frontlight turned off and turned back on.
