Ran System File Checker. Interestingly enough it did find corrupt files and fixed them, but no change to the Calibre behavior.
I appreciate all the suggestions, by the way. Maybe I'll do a reformat and fresh Windows install at some point down the line to exhaust all options, but for now I suppose I'll have to stick with 5.44.
