I was recently rejuvenating a really old laptop, and ended up putting Bodhi Linux on it. I got this same message when trying to start Calibre. Discovered a useful thing:

Set the environment variable QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS=1

This will give you more information when Calibre fails to start, so you can figure out what is missing. I ended up having to install 4 0r 5 "xcb" things before it worked.
