I was actually taking about "computer system" in general, to be honest. Not specifically about Kindles.
In the case of Kindles, however, I think they still hold, but again: as a general rule, and as a general good security habits. Of course in the particular case where you never ever connect to the internet even the smallest need goes away.
However it was not about being obliged. No one is; it was just about rushing to apply the latest patches or not, and we explained why we don't rush.
