I am pretty sure it did, at one time. I remember doing a database backup of my Clara HD about a year ago and was trying to figure out in which tables the My Words were stored, and I definitely recall there being an association with a book presumably so that the "Show in book" option would function and take you directly to the spot in the book where that word shows up for context.

If they've removed it, I wonder why. I've long requested from Kobo that the "My Words" section should be able to sync across devices and with the smartphone app so that I could turn the words into flashcards and try to drill them. That would be very easy to do with the app, but not so much with the e-reader. So if breaking the association between the word itself and the book you found it in would let them do that, I'd be cool with the change.
