Most of them weren't readers, just like most people today aren't, and taverns and brothels require money (quite a lot of those nobles weren't rich); in earlier times the main occupation of idle nobility was warfare, but by the 17th century most European armies had professional soldiers for that, so what were the poor bastards to do but duel among themselves?
