I suspect the lack of frequent kindle updates the past getting close to 10 years basically means that the product line is mature and there's no real need to keep updating the hardware and that the product line isn't necessarily making Amazon much money.
I mean, the last two major steps forward were warm frontlight on the Oasis 3 in 2019 and frontlighting on the first Paperwhite in what, 2012?
EDIT: It wouldn't surprise me much if there weren't any major updates until Amazon feels color eInk is "good enough" for mass market adoption.
