You are right.

I just tried it with some Airpods 3, and the Find My isn't very accurate. I walked out in the yard, and placed the airpods in two different locations, some distance apart. When I looked on Find My (on my phone), it showed the location of the earbuds in an old location, together, far from where they were. Once I approached one of the earbuds, it showed its location, but it was the location of the phone (not the earbud).
