Authors don't get paid for book readings unless the store wants to pay a big name like Dan Brown. They don't get paid much for going to conventions, or signing books, or anything else that takes time away from their writing, either. (They might get paid for interviews.)

Compared to how much bands make from live concerts it's really no comparison.
