This happens, a bit differently, where I am; here, anything mammalian and under 30-50 lbs is a snack. Not really joking; we live with packs of coyotes, bobcats (not packs, there, obviously), and other predators; smaller animals like small cats, miniature dog-anythings like Chihuahuas, Pinschers, and that size are easily--and I mean, easily--snatched up by Death from Above, in the massive raptors we have here, mostly hawks during the day but some Goldens and at night, we are the winter home of Great Horned Owls, and they really are death from above.

We do, of course, though, also have dogs that get out, and get loose (homes here typically are not walled or yarded), and yes, they can be struck by the occasional passing car, which, given our utter dearth of traffic, you gotta wonder.

But the thing with living here is, if you see a pet, you immediately must rescue it. You can't assume it's "not lost," or it's "always out" or...you just can't because 99% of domestic pets outside here won't make it. We have tons of "lost" things pinned to the mailboxes and the like...it's heartbreaking, and everybody up here tries to warn the newbies, the city people who move in and throw open their doors and all their pets run outside...urghghghghg.
