As far as I found, alterior is not a regional variant but has been used as an antonym to ulterior where it doesn't seem to be a simple mispelling. Perhaps in a decade or so, it may move into the accepted English vocabulary. For real fun, check such items as the British vs. US pronunciation of lieutenant (don't look at Canada where you can find both pronunciations in use).
