Rather than left clicking on a header to do an ad-hoc single column sort, do a right click and select the topmost option, or try using the Sort by tool.

Sort by allows sorting on columns you can't see. Its default short cut is Ctrl+F5, and/or you can add it to a menu/toolbar.

@chaley - provide a "Disable column sorting with mouse clicks" checkbox setting in Preferences->Sorting. The only time I 'use' left mouse click sorting is when I miss with a left click on a VL tab.
