I only read at home and don't use either covers or screen protectors. Not a single scratched screen in 12 years, despite always having several indoor cats. I just don't put my ereader down somewhere a cat could step or jump on it. It's become a second nature to me.
I use a cheap stylus with a rubber tip to interact with the screen, not fingers. For page turning I use buttons. So I rarely have to clean fingerprints off, and for dust/lint a slight brushing with a soft cloth will suffice.
I do have small scratches on my phone screen, as I don't use a stylus with it, and I'm not quite so careful with my phone as I am with my ereaders. I do use a sleeve with my phone, though.
