I really don't know how the template language works internally in calibre. I don't know if there is an API exposing it to the user. But I don't think it would be a good idea anyway, because calibre is much faster. Processing the template when running the plugin would only slow it down.

The problem is that past years are not updated except when re-adding. Also, this is something very specific: you must want to change your genre column used to add the books, and you have a book being reread from that year. That's something most people will never do, and if someone does, it will be a one time thing.

There was no change to this recently. But first versions indeed asked for all the data to be filled before adding. Then, I changed it to accept Date/Page Count to be empty until the Reading progress reaches 100%, when it will prompt you to fill those fields.
