Kindle OTA firmware questions and "CB01" bundle

First, has anyone confirmed that OTA updates require being registered with Amazon?
My unregistered devices haven't gotten updates, and as far as I can tell the "softwareupdats.amazon.com/software/inventory2" requires "x-adp-sig" authentication.

The inventory2 URL has two components
  • com.lab126.eink.<PRODUCT>.os
  • com.lab126.eink.<PRODUCT>.app.nh

The "os" binary is identical to the version from the Amazon download page.

The "app.nh" binary does not seem to correspond to something on the Amazon download page.
KindleTool is at a loss as to what to do with it - the Bundle version is "Unknown (0x43423031 [ CB01 ])" and KindleTool complains about "Unknown update bundle version".

Does anyone know more about this download?

Tangentially, is the "SHA256withECDSA" reverse engineering taboo?
