To tell the truth, there is nothing particular about it.
It's just that, in France at least, we have a name attached to each day, usually saints, like Florent, Pierre, Marguerite, ...
Here, I've found these English articles in Wikipedia :

The list has been expanded these last years to include names that are not part of the Christian tradition.
We usually send wishes or say a kind word to people whose name is the saint of the day.
