As you have several eink Kindles, you won't need the desktop app at all to strip the DRM; you can use the Download & Transfer option to do that. Of course, if you don't want to strip the DRM, that's your choice.
As to duplicates, I'd have a pile of them if I
didn't use Calibre.
I could never remember what I've already bought and what not, and as I buy from several different stores, it would take a lot of time to check every one of them every time I want to buy something.
