At least one local shop has gone to paper bags with handles. Sadly, the last time I was in that shop, the person ahead of me in line placed two 2 litre milk cartons in one. When they went to pick it up, the handles went with their hand while the bag stayed behind. The clerk explained that that much weight needed to be double bagged at 50¢ per bag and you need to be gentle handling them.

Much like @CRussel, I have a collection of durable reusable bags. Too many of the bags being sold are not durable and won't last more than 2 or 3 shopping trips before having to be discarded.
