An elderly checkout lady I don't know from Adam (Eve?) insisted on referring to me as Poppy/Poppi several times today. I've no idea why, or what it might mean. It doesn't annoy me as much as hon|honey|sweetie, I guess, but I've never understood the compulsion to address adult strangers with cutesy nicknames. It's not like names (real or otherwise) are needed in such an exchange. "Do you have a courtesy card" and "that'll be $19.79" and "have a nice day" will suffice, thank you.
