I assume the name change is to move it out of the way so the new one can install to /Applications/Kindle.app/ folder, and allow for migrating things before (potentially) deleting the old app folder), and allow a clean start.

I think the email indicated that it would be necessary to run both the old and new app side by side to import old collections into the new app.
But you’re right the name change is definitely to make room for a new Kindle App.
