If someone owns an older Kindle that is still working and being used to read with then why would Amazon want to force them to stop using it? That would just create bad feelings and might prompt them to move to a competitor.

As far as I know the profit in the Kindle ecosystem comes from the sale of books, not Kindles. And a book delivered in old MOBI format sells for the same price as one in the latest KFX.

First I doubt whether many publishers give a thought to how their books look in MOBI these days. And in the rare cases where they get called out because a book is unreadable in MOBI it is better to have Amazon siding with its customers than with its suppliers.
