It's fine and fine for all family members that have tried. There are now five Sage users in the wider family and the writing is fine for them and others that have tried. A few have tried my Elipsa and find it better than the reMarkable, but that Sage is a handier size for notes, drawing and reading epub novels.
All agree that have tried the Wacom on the Lenovo X201 screen, bamboo and earlier serial Wacom and reMarkable that it's far better.
Maybe you had a faulty Elipsa or a faulty pen?
Two models of pen are 3rd party cheap ones sold for MS Surface (I think model 3 to current), but without the extra Bluetooth connected button on later MS Pens.
Only the Elipsa has the Kobo pen. All the Sage users have 3rd party pens, but there seems to be no difference to using those on the Elipsa or the Kobo pen that came with the Elipsa on the Sage.

The pen with the Elipsa 1 gen is hard to hold and my hand wants to keep pressing the side buttons drove me nuts. I have a microsoft pen but I broke the NIB on it. Even still the surface pen does not flow well when writing. The pen with the 2E is so much better
