Reading status on the kobo is pretty primitive.
It keeps track of how long you've been reading and how long your average reading session is and pages per minute or something, but that's about it.

It keeps total statistics and statistics per book, but it doesn't have a convenient interface to easily view these, and if you remove the book from the device, I think the book stats are lost. It does keep track of how many books and hours you've read (since last factory reset anyway--stats are lost if your database is corrupted).

If you use a third party reader, likely none of the stats will be updated by the third party reader. (I'm not even sure that would be possible.)

You can manage books with kobo's system, but koreader won't use the kobo shelves (it will see only folders) and likely can't read DRM books the kobo downloads.

For kepub books, the kobo tries to predict how much time you have left in the book, chapter, and how long it will take to read the next chapter. I haven't checked how accurate those stats are, but they don't seem too far off. (Do they adjust for my reading speed? idunno.) I enjoy this feature quite a bit.
