In most situations the Windows Character Map is overkill and it can't be invoked with a key-sequence without something like AHK, last time I looked the same goes for BabelMap.

The advantage of tray applets (like the Transtools utilities) is that they can be used practically everywhere, without getting caught up in the vagaries of application child windows and dialogue box types… and you don't have to learn how to do essentially the same thing in ten different ways.
