Don't rely on AV.

When I did IT in the past, all the computers with malware had AV already installed.
Many years ago: Norton AV checking accidentally deployed a virus.

Avoid dodgy sites
Don't open mail attachments you did not expect, even from folk you know (they may have been hacked or spoofed) . The message may give you warm fuzzy's that it is real, otherwise avoid vague, non-personalize body text raves.

LOOK at the status bar before clicking. Many show the LINK URL (which may be nothing like what the text shows.

Avoid "shortened" URLs (against MR guidelines for a reason) as you have no idea where you will end up.
