For me, "it gets good" is what people say to rationalize the time and money they have spent on something bad. Even if its true and "it" does get good, they're still acknowledging that the opening is bad.

For me, that one is tough. I haven't yet tried Stephen Donaldson's Gap series because of exactly that. I do believe it gets good. But if reading the first book is a slog through misery, I know I won't ever feel like picking up the second book.
